Google for Jobs: how your job adverts appear on Google
In this guide
1. What Google for Jobs is
Anyone searching for a job on Google often sees a separate box with matching vacancies, filters for location and working hours and a direct link to apply. These listings do not come from paid placements but from companies' careers pages.
Inclusion is free. Google reads structured data in the JobPosting format embedded in the job page. If it is missing or the page is blocked for search engines, the job will not appear there.
2. The technical requirements
Every job needs its own publicly accessible page with a complete description. Google must be allowed to crawl and index the page. A sitemap listing all open jobs helps new adverts become known quickly.
The required details include the title, description, date posted, the hiring organisation and the place of work. For remote jobs, you state instead which country applicants may work from. In Reclyra this data is created automatically as soon as you enable the Google for Jobs option in the settings.
3. Details that improve visibility
Google also recommends a salary, the employment type and the company logo. Salary in particular is an important filter for many job seekers. With the EU Pay Transparency Directive, a salary range in job adverts is becoming standard anyway.
Phrase the title the way applicants search: ‘Registered nurse’ works better than ‘Big-hearted person for our team’. Internal codes, special characters or several roles in one advert make it harder to match.
4. Avoid common mistakes
Filled positions must be taken offline. If expired adverts remain in the structured data, Google may restrict how the whole website is shown. An applicant tracking system that keeps published jobs and the careers page in sync takes this maintenance off your hands.
Also avoid duplicate adverts for the same job on different pages and details that do not match the description. You can check whether everything is recognised correctly with the Rich Results Test and in Google Search Console.
